The use of Leverage & Margin

One of the main appealing factors about forex trading is the use of Leverage & Margin. It allows you to use a small amount of capital to open and maintain a much larger position. For example, if you want to open a trade of $100,000 worth of EURUSD, you don’t have to have that $100,000 dollars in your account!

What is Leverage?
Technically, leverage is where a trader has a large sum at their disposal while using a significantly smaller amount of their own funds. They effectively borrow the rest from their broker.

For example, if you’re trading with a 1:100 leverage, and you have $1,000 USD in your account, you’ve got $100,000 available for trading. Although this sounds like an insanely good opportunity, you must always remember that it’s a double-edged sword.

What is Forex?

Foreign exchange, or Forex for short, is quite simply a market where you’re able to exchange one currency for another. When you ‘sell’ a currency, there is a buyer for that currency somewhere else. Now, the exchange rate between those two currencies is what’s important when trading forex. The exchange rate is constantly fluctuating, and it’s these fluctuations that allow market speculators to earn from trading.

With a daily trade volume of $6.5 trillion dollars, the forex market itself is huge! It eclipses the likes of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) which, by comparison, has a trading volume of only $22.4 billion per day.

The Forex Market’s sheer size attracts a wide range of different participants, including Central Banks, Investment Managers, Hedge Funds, Corporations, Brokers and Retail Traders – with 90% of those market participants being currency speculators!

What are Precious Metals?

Precious metals like Gold and Silver are tradable instruments classed as a commodity, therefore making their price relatively uniform across the world.

Traders tend to use precious metals as ‘safe-haven’ assets which become more tradable as economic developments and political unrest cause increased volatility across other markets. Afterall, when adverse market conditions arise from war, recession, government debt issues etc, Gold retains its value whereas stocks and currencies are vulnerable to significant losses.

Gold and Silver are characteristically limited in supply, which means that they tend to be of higher value. Where Gold is used as the main safe-haven asset, Silver is typically used in industrial production. Therefore, it’s more susceptible to price fluctuations from changes in business conditions.

How do you calculate your transaction cost?

To work out the cost of a trade itself (not including swaps, commissions etc.), you take the spread and pip value and multiply it by the number of lots that you’re trading:
Trade Cost = Spread X Trade Size X Pip Value

For example:
A trade you have opened has 1.2 pips spread. In this example, you’re trading with mini lots which are 10,000 base units.
The pip value is at $1, so the transaction cost is $1.20

As you’ve probably gathered, the bigger the trade, the larger your transaction costs will be!

What is a Bond?

In simple terms, a bond is an agreement between a borrower and a lender, where a borrower finances a project by issuing a bond. Bonds, also known as treasuries or securities, are generally issued by governments. The issuer of a bond, or the ‘borrower’, sets the interest rate which is then paid to the investor. At the maturity of this bond the investor is then paid back their initial investment.

Unlike stocks, there’s no central exchange to buy and sell bonds. The bond market is an ‘over-the-counter’ market, which is much bigger than the stock market! It’s also important to note that, as a trader, you aren’t directly buying or selling the bond, you’re simply speculating about how the bond will appreciate or depreciate in value over time.

HOW-TO

Trade Precious Metals

Buying and selling precious metals doesn’t require you to buy or sell the physical product. You’re simply speculating on the changes in price, just like you would with other financial derivatives.

Price drivers for precious metals, however, are inversely different to other types of financial instrument. Where stocks and shares may see a decrease in value following political unrest or war, precious metals see an influx of investment, driving their prices higher.

Factors that usually affect precious metal prices are supply and demand, national and global economic trends, inflation, USD strength, interest rates, government policy, technology and more.
