Extensions are categories of Internet domain names. There are several of them to choose from: .com represents the word "commercial," and is the most widely used extension in the world. Most businesses prefer a .com domain name because it is a highly recognized symbol for having a business presence on the Internet.

That is the suffix of the domain. There’re thousands of domain name extensions nowadays. Each will represent niche, market or something fun in the world. However some of popular extensions are .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ,…are used most, they’re called gTLD

2 types of TLD

gTLD is Generic Top-level Domains. We have 2 types of gTLD

  • unSponsored gTLDs (such as: .com, .net, .org, .name).
  • sponsored gTLDs (such as: .shop, .mobi, .jobs, .travel). Some new gTLDs (such as nTLD: .fun, .web, .link, .club, .click).

ccTLD is Country code top-level domains such as: .io, .in, .me, .co, .de,…

The .com, .net and .org are the most common ones, with .com being the most popular one. They are almost half of all registered domain names. The .com domains are very neutral, geographically, so you can target the whole world. And as .com stands for COMmercial, it tends to have lots of online stores and commercial sites, world-wide.

Domain extensions, also known as Top Level Domains or TLDs, are the suffixes or the last part of a domain name - the letters that come after the dot to the right of any domain name. For example, most URL addresses end with .com - this is an example of a domain extension or TLD.
