What is the Difference Between Web Design and Web Development

Recommended Posts

Many people use the two terms "web design" and "web development" interchangeably, but they actually have two different meanings. If you're looking for a new job within the web design industry, or if you are someone looking to hire a professional web to build a website for you or your company, you need to know the difference between these two terms and skillsets that come with them.

web design

Web design is the term most commonly used for professionals in this industry. Often, when someone says they are "web designer" which refers to a very broad set of skills, one of which is the visual design.

"Design" part of the equation are related to customer-facing or "front end" section of the website. A web designer is concerned with how the site looks and how customers interact with it (they are sometimes also referred to as an "experience designer"). Good web designers know using design principles to create a site that looks great.

They also know about the usefulness of the web and how to make the site user friendly that customers wanted to navigate inside because it is so easy and intuative to do so.

web development

web development comes in two flavors - the development of front-end and back-end development. Some skills in two flavors overlap, but they have very different goals in web design profession.

A front-end developers take the visual design of a website (if they made it or design it handed to them by a visual designer) and build in the code. A front-end developers will use HTML for the site structure, CSS dictate visual style and layout, and maybe even some Javascript. For some small sites, the development of front-end may be the only kind of development that is required for the project. For projects that are more complex, "back-end" development will come into play.

Back-end programming deals with the development of more advanced and interactions on the page. A back-end web developer focusing on how the site works and how customers get something on it using certain functions. This could include working with code that interfaces with a database or create features such as E-commerce shopping cart connected to online payment processor and much more. good web developers may know how the CGI programs and scripts like PHP. They will also understand how the web works and how the form of a software package and API (application programming interface) that is different can be used to connect different packages.

Many People Blur Lines

While some web professionals specializing or focus on specific areas, many of them are blurring the lines between different disciplines. They may be most comfortable working with visual design using programs such as Adobe Photoshop, but they also might know something about HTML and CSS and may be able to code some basic pages. After this cross-knowledge actually very helpful because it can make you much more valuable in the industry and better at what you do overall. A visual designer that understands how web pages are built to be better prepared to design the page and experience. Similarly, web developers who have an understanding of the fundamentals of design and visual communication can make smart choices for their code on the page and interaction for their project.

In the end, if you have knowledge of this traffic or not, when you apply for a job or looking for someone to work on your site, you need to know what you are looking for - web design or web development. The skills that you rent to will play a major role in the cost of what you would have to spend to get the job done. In many cases, the design and development of front-end for smaller, simpler sites would be much less (every hour) than renting advanced back-end coder. For larger sites and projects, you will definitely hire a professional team that contains the web that covers all the different disciplines.
